What causes the engine cylinder scoring? What is its relation with the quality of lubricating oil?

The engine cylinder is gradually worn if normally used. The cylinder scoring means the serious surface damage caused by the interaction of piston and cylinder. The damage is mostly caused by the partial damage of lubricating oil film. In this case, scratch, cylinder sticking and scoring are mostly likely to occur. All these conditions are collectively referred to as cylinder scoring although their damage extent is varied.

Main causes of cylinder scoring:
1. The clearance between the piston and the cylinder is too small;
2. Poor lubrication between piston and cylinder, improper engine oil selected;
3. The piston ring is broken and seized onto the piston, or the piston pin clamping spring is broken or falls off.
4. The piston and piston ring topple and fall on one side and are tightly pressed against the cylinder wall;
5. After the engine overhaul, it will run at high speed or heavy load for a long time without running-in;
6. The engine is inappropriately cooled and the cooling system is faulty;
7. The oil is not clean and contains a lot of impurities;
8. Long-term traveling at overload and low speed;
9. The cylinder produced by a non-regular manufacturer has low hardness and poor quality;
10. The air filter fails, and the vacancy impurities are mixed into the combustion chamber and fall into the cylinder wall.

After mechanical faults are eliminated, four aspects of engine oil shall be taken into account:
1. The viscosity of the engine oil is improper.
2. The grade of selected engine oil is inappropriate, it is recommended to use SF, SG grade oil.
3. Too much engine oil impurities.
4. The air filter fails, so that the air with impurities enters into the engine, and the impurities are mixed in the engine oil, which has a great impact on vehicles that are easy to consume engine oil and carry over gas.

Therefore, the cylinder scoring, mechanical fault and lubrication system fault may be caused. The engine oil quality problem is not likely to cause the cylinder scoring and have little relation with the engine oil quality. The critical point lies in the fact that how car owners select the engine oil and maintain the cars at ordinary times.
